Our Lambda School: Labs 20 development team and Key Conservation director grabbed a group photo together to celebrate the end of their successful development cycle!
Even in times of uncertainty, conservation doesn't stop.
That's why we are proud to be building a community platform where people can support conservation efforts no matter where they are or what is going on in the world. Giving the power to the people to make an impactnow instead of depending on others to take a stand. This month, we are excited to share with you the progress we've made on the Key Conservation app and what is up next! We were incredibly lucky to have had an amazing team of developers from Lambda School working on the app these past 8 weeks. Check out the features they built below.
(Remember, the development of Key is still in process so there are still tweaks to be made on styling, spacing and overall appearance of these features but the core functionality, which is the very foundation of the app, has been built within these new features.)
A SAFE COMMUNITY IS KEY: CREATING ADMIN CONTROL
The team created admin controls throughout the app that will allow individuals to report comments, campaigns, and accounts directly to the Key admin team for us to review. With our admin account, we are able to access reports from the community, see how many times a person or organization has been reported, delete offensive material, as well as, temporarily or permanently shut down accounts. Creating a safe, positive and scientifically respected community is our top priority and these new admin controls give us and the community the capacity to do so.
BUILD YOUR COMMUNITY: CONNECT FEATURE
The team finalized the connect feature which allows individuals to connect with one another and follow organizations. Key is set up where individuals have to request to connect with one another instead of following (this is to create a community based on collaboration and professionalism instead of followers). Creating the connect feature is the first major step in establishing a collaborative community. Our goal in the future is to allow peer to organization and peer to peer messaging and also allow individuals to see within their own Live Feed what their friends are up to in the app. With the new connect feature an individual can click on the connections within their own profile and see what organizations and individuals they are connected with and click their logos to learn more.
In the future, we hope to add mutual connections and a way to send a short message within connection requests so you can learn more about who is trying to connect with you.
We also want to make it so when individuals follow conservation organizations they will then be able to see those updates on the Live Feed first before any other posts by other organizations. That being said, all other posts made by organizations that individuals are not following will still be seen they will just be further down after the posts made by organizations they follow. Our goal is to make it so all posts by all organizations are seen as they come in and by as many people as possible so each organization receives the support they need.

GLOBAL MAP: SEE WHERE CONSERVATION IS HAPPENING AND GET INVOLVED
The Key Conservation app has 5 navigation tabs on the bottom of the app. These 5 tabs are the Live Feed, In-Person, Skilled Impact, Notifications, and Profile. Until now the only ones created were the Live Feed and Profile but we are now excited to announce that the In-Person tab of the app has officially been created! This section of the app is especially exciting because this is where individuals can pull up a map of where they are in the world and see what conservation organizations are around them. They can also find organizations in places they want to visit, find local groups they can join, local events they can go to, as well as a dedicated place where they can report any activities they observe that need assistance from a local conservation organization. We still have a way to go in creating all of these features but individuals can now see where all of the organizations on the Key app are in the world and they have the ability to click on their profiles to learn more.
One big step forward!
AND A FEW MORE THINGS IN THE WORKS...
As you can guess, there are many other features that are in the works that we haven't shared with you yet. The app is ever-evolving but once a feature is ready to share you will be the first to learn more! Here's a small preview of the features that are in the works:
We moved the entire application process for conservation organizations from our website to directly within the app through a simple and streamlined onboarding process. When organizations apply to be on Key all of their input data will automatically save and will auto-populate in their profiles. This way once applications are approved organizations can sign in and their profiles are ready to go.
We are currently working on setting up in-app donations so supporters can fund campaigns within the Live Feed.
The Skilled Impact tab backend code is in the final stages which means having the ability to use skills to help conservation organizations is one step closer to being deployed onto the app! This section of the app is extremely complex so it will take several development cycles to finalize the frontend development and integrate it into the existing code and we can't wait!
We are working on a way to get deep linking set up within the app. This means that each campaign post and each profile page will have a unique link that can be shared with anyone. If this unique link is clicked the user would be taken to that campaign post or profile directly. This will help organizations gain support across any platform and also allow supporters to share organizations or campaigns with friends, in emails, blogs, etc.
Lots of design work and research!
There may not be a lot of things we can control right now but one thing wecancontrol is supporting those who help protect the world that we love. More than ever we feel motivated and determined to keep moving forward to create Key and I feel so lucky to be surrounded by such an inspiring team.
We look forward to keeping the good news and exciting updates coming! In the meantime keep up the good fight and if you can support your local conservation organization!
